925 Silver

by William Corry
925 Silver means each item is made from 925 parts of silver and 75 parts other metals. These other metals are unspecified but are usually nickel and copper. Hallmarking is a guarantee that your silver is “Sterling” or “925” silver. Sterling silver means that the silver is .925. There is also Britannia silver which is .950. Some people are of the misconception that to be Sterling silver the silver has to be mined in the UK or made here. Not true – it is just a name for the grade of silver.
